The monumental statue of Germania is a 38 m high and 32 tons
heavy bronze cast, located on a hilltop called Niederwald, over-
looking the river Rhine near Koblenz. The monument was created
to celebrate
the German Kingdom, which was for the first time united
in 1871. The artist Johannes Schilling was commissioned to create it.
Construction work began in 1877, and the
monument was opened by
The German Kaiser Wilhelm I on 28 Sept. 1883. Hence, the monument
was not finished yet when this bookmark was issued in 1880.
